Samantha’s life with horses began just as it does for most pony-mad children – she was hooked after her first ride. Soon after, trotting around in a riding school wasn’t enough for Sam and her interest and desire to compete in showjumping quickly blossomed.
In the years followed, competing in affiliated competitions became a big part in Samantha’s life and weekends were spent travelling up and down the country to compete in 128 & 138 pony qualifiers. One of Samantha’s highlights was winning the Winter 138 Royal International Horse Show second round as the only child to gain a triple clear round, this lead to her first experience in the International Arena at Hickstead at just thirteen. Behind the scenes, Samantha finessed her horsemanship skills riding newly backed ponies and producing them to be sold when she wasn’t competing.
Stepping up to horses aged sixteen, Samantha understood that she needed to gain further experience and explore a range of training philosophies from various professionals. A major highlight was travelling to Palm Springs for a once-in-a-lifetime training opportunity with Olympic showjumping gold medallists Laura Kraut and Nick Skelton. Samantha also recognised the importance of consulting trainers and experiencing perspectives outside the world of showjumping, spending valuable months gaining experience on race and event yards. As someone who appreciates flatwork as a fundamental of showjumping, Samantha takes the time to produce her horses up to BD Novice in competition.
In 2012, after years of honing her craft and producing a number of her own and owners’ horses up to 1.40m National level, Samantha decided to set up her own Livery & Training yard in Gautby, Lincolnshire. She has since gained her UKCC BSL2 accredited Coach qualification and competed overseas at International CSI 2*. Her principal aim is to compete in a ranking class on one of her homebreds.
